Technology Presentation: WordPress

How does WordPress ask us to use it?

Type directly into the site or copy and paste from another word processor

Serves as a platform to share ideas/removes the idea of a private space of writing and allows for engagement with others

Constrains or affords certain types of writing?

May be a refreshing form of lower stakes writing for students/users

More friendly/casual setting than something such as Microsoft Word

Promotes a variety of writing topics, from cooking to fiction to travel to lifestyle and more

  • Began in 2003
  • WordPress known as the largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world
  • Geared towards beginners, but then has features to increase with your level of expertise
  • Tool designed to remove HTML part of website, so to create a website you just have to write the content. WordPress took care of the rest.
  • Helps give a reason to the explosion of blogs, as they simplified the blog creation process, allowing writers to focus on writing rather than computer aspects like html, sql, or ftp

  • Constraining in the sense that it is fairly linear
  • Does not allow for much movement with text

  • Does not easily allow for many outside of the box ideas/fairly standard
  • Creates levels since some features cost money
  • Possibility of advertisements

Fits into the work of Composition and Rhetoric by serving as a place to write and easily share ideas with others, all over the world and in different fields. The sense of writing collaboration is found using blogs. Can also search for certain topics using the tags, making research more accessible. Allows for the joining of visuals/images/videos as well as alphabetic text.
